​His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam says in efforts to elevate the name or status of UBD, one of the core factors is through exploring the field of research. Research is the way to differentiate between a university and other institutes of higher learning. In this regard, His Majesty has consented to the establishment of UBD centres which are the Institute of Applied Data Analytics, formerly known as the UBD/IBM Centre and the FPT-UBD Innovation Lab as a result of a joint collaboration with the FPT University in Viet Nam.

Touching on the standards of the institutes of higher learning, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam emphasises the core factors for improving quality, which are education, research and internationalisation.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah expresses the wish to see more research results that can benefit commercial activities and promote job opportunities. His Majesty as the Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD made the titah at the 29th Convocation ceremony of UBD yesterday. Touching on competitiveness, His Majesty takes note and congratulates the UBD for being in the QS World University Rankings' for the first time this year. The Monarch also takes notes that the university is within the 1.03 percent of the world's top universities and in 37th position among universities below 50 years old.
