BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

Kota Junior romped to a comprehensive 8-2 victory over newcomers First Five in the Takaful Brunei Futsal Super League 2016 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.

The second team who advanced to Brunei futsal premier division, First Five, took the place of TelBru Futsal Premier Cup finalists Star Madang as the next best team in third place.

Faizul Jefry Haji Zaini returned to the score-sheet with a brace in the second and 39th minutes while the match was also flooded by goals from Abdul Muinuddin Abdullah, Mohammad Faiz, Mohammad Nor Azizam Roslan, Muhammad Syukriee Haji Mohd Effendy, Nur Yamin bin Haji Mohammad and Awangku Muhammad Naqib bin Pengiran Timbang.

First Five did not leave empty-headed against the champions though as they scored two late consolation goals through a wonderful Nizamuddin free-kick and Amirul three minutes from time.

Kota Junior manager Steven Yen, visibly pleased with the result, said that on evidence of their opponents' showing, it will not be long until they adapt to the demanding' conditions of Brunei's futsal top flight.

He rotated his first-choice goalkeeper in the second half who despite conceding twice still pulled off magnificent stops as First Five enjoyed a rare spell of possession.

Meanwhile, fellow title contenders MS ABDB, who briefly held top spot midway through the league last year, edged Street FT 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller in an earlier kick-off.

Saiful Ariffin opened the scoring in the 5th minute for the army personnel but was cancelled out by Md Nathan for Street a minute later.

Street snatched a 2-1 lead through Ahmad Arif in the 7th minute but Harun levelled the tie for MS ABDl3 in the 15th minute.

Street regained the lead in the 17th minute through Awangku Hamirul but goals from Safari in the 31st minute and Ramli Merali in the 37th minute gave MS ABDB a winning start.
