Launching Of UTB's 4th Convocation Festival

His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office as Pro-Chancellor of University Teknologi Brunei, UTB yesterday officiated UTB's fourth Convocation Festival. With the theme "INNOV8", the festival was held in conjunction with the institution's Convocation Ceremony and takes place at the UTB Library Complex in Tungku Link, Gadong.

 

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education as Chairman of UTB Council and Professor Doctor Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor of UTB.

 

The event commenced with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat dipimpin oleh Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

 

His Royal Highness then officiated the fourth Convocation festival. This year's Convocation theme "INNOV8" portrays the elements of innovation at UTB. The theme emphasised on innovation of an organisation that can assist and contribute toward improvements in thinking, ideas, research quality, teaching and learning as well as communication with the public that will have new added values that can be utilised, in line with UTB's status as a university of engineering and technology. The number 8 that can be found within the theme signifies the eight important areas where innovation has been applied towards achieving excellence as a whole.

 

His Royal Highness then viewed exhibition that contain eight components that portrays different innovative approaches in eight major fields including network, research, campus, entrepreneurship and leadership. All of these are catalysts towards producing UTB graduates who can make impactful contribution to the nation. The 'Innov8 Network' exhibition showcase UTB's efforts in strengthening and diversifying innovative researches through network collaborations with various local and international institutions as well as industries.

 

Meanwhile, the 'Innov8 Research' exhibition focuses on two projects by graduates in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The 'Innov8 Campus' showcase the efforts to provide a conducive campus and strengthen the infrastructures for research and learning. His Royal Highness then viewed the Isle Graden, which was officiated by His Royal Highness during the second Convocation Festival in 2015. At the 'Innov8 UTB SB', His Royal Highness also officiated the 'UTB Start-up Kiosk'. Students from UTB Business School displayed their project titled 'Terpisah Movie by Creight Media', 'PLUS EXP, and 'Mayang Couture'.

 

Meanwhile, the 'Innov8 SCI' exhibition by UTB's School of Computing and Informatics display projects such as 'Subduing the Audience in an Immersive Digital Environment; Interactive Driving Lessons using Virtual Reality; the Smart LED Street Light System that won first place under the Tertiary Category of the Brunei ICT Awards, BICTA, 2017.; as well as the Smart Waste Management and Monitoring System. At the Lecture Hall, His Royal Highness viewed a short horror film titled 'Terpisah' produced by students of UTB School of Business as their final year project.

 

The 'Innov8 Faculty of Engineering' features several engineering projects such as the development on the design and fabrication of an automated shoe rack and bionic leg. Meanwhile, the 'Innov8 Enterprise' is one of UTB's efforts in implementing its responsibility towards the community through the involvement of the students in various levels. UTB established a new Enterprise Office with the aim to provide high quality training.

 

At the 'Innov8 Leader' exhibition, it focus on innovative implementation of community engagement programmes by UTB students. His Royal Highness also mingled with the students who are under the 'Innov8 Leader' programme. The Convocation Festival is held annually to celebrate the students who have completed their studies. A series of events have been lined up in conjunction with the festival including the Career Fair, Khatam Al-Quran ceremony and the 'Innov8 Run and Cycle'. UTB's Convocation Ceremony is scheduled to take on the 30th of this month at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
