The State Mufti, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr. Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned yesterday called for more action to reduce the number of divorces in the country, saying that organising family days, gatherings, picnics and sports days is not enough to solve the problem.
He said practical programmes must be formulated to curb the rising number of divorces, which he called an illness caused by weak faith in the teachings of Islam.
The issue should be mitigated through Dakwah such as through education, public lectures and counselling, he said while delivering a Prime Lecture entitled 'Strengthening Family Institution' in conjunction with the Family Day Celebration 2016 at the Main Theatre, Prime Minister's Office yesterday.
Islam nurtures a strong family institution and shows us how to build a strong family foundation to prevent a household from being dysfunctional, unhappy and eventually collapsing, he added.
Islam provides guidance on how to achieve happiness, however, people neglect or do not take seriously the guidance, he said.
People are inclined to choose their own personal 'style' which can result in families becoming dysfunctional, he said.
He said Islam shows us how to raise a family like how we build a house. First, we need to choose a suitable site, and then we need to look at the building materials. All must be examined with strong attention to detail.
He said in 2015, Brunei recorded 524 divorce cases compared to 259 cases the previous year.
Cabinet Ministers and other officials attending the lecture held in conjunction with the Family Day Celebration 2016 at the Main Theatre, Prime Minister's Office yesterday.
The State Mufti said a family will eventually collapse if problems such as dishonesty between husband and wife occur such as an affair, a husband neglecting his responsibilities or not providing 'nafkah' to wife and children or abusing them mentally or physically.
He said the ailment must be cured through the teachings of Allah the Almighty and not just by organising family days or events.
He said there are a number of channels to deliver Dakwah, amongst them and most effectively is through education.
