KOTA KINABALU

Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal was detained by the Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission (MACC), yesterday.

Shafie presented himself at the MACC office at the State Federal Administrative Complex at 5.15pm after arriving from Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Close to a hundred of Warisan leaders and supporters welcomed him at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport earlier at 3.30pm.

When met yesterday, Shafie said he was ready to cooperate with MACC in its investigation into the alleged siphoning of RM1.5 billion in federal funds allocated for rural projects in Sabah, since 2009.

“They (MACC) are only doing their job and I will give my full cooperation to ensure a smooth process for them in their investigation.

“I’m not afraid and am ready to answer their questions as to the best of my knowledge but I ask to be treated fairly,” he said yesterday.

When asked about the detention of his siblings Yusof and Hamid by MACC, Shafie said he was saddened over the outcome.

“Of course as a brother, I’m sad that my siblings are dragged … they have gone overboard with the arrest of my family members,” he said.

“It is all a big show and nothing more; I have always maintained my rights from the beginning that I am willing to cooperate with MACC.

“I know they have to do their job, and that’s why I will cooperate,” he added.

Shafie said he was in Kuala Lumpur when his lawyers received a call from MACC.

“They want to investigate me, so here I am,” he said.

Asked if he believed the investigation was politically motivated, he said, “Well it’s near election.”
