KUALA LUMPUR
In an immediate reaction to flash floods which struck the city on Monday (Oct 30), Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic) said developers will be slapped with stop work orders if they fail to improve drainage systems on their project sites.
Federal Territories Minister said the warnings were issued by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to developers of the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway and Bangsar South City projects following investigations into the flash floods which inundated the Federal Highway on Oct 30.
"We will issue stop work orders if developers do not comply with requirements," he said when replying a question by Hee Loy Sian (PKR-Petaling Jaya Selatan) during Question Time in Parliament Thursday.
He told lawmakers that DBKL had directed the developers to upgrade their drainage systems and ensure better supervision of retention ponds and debris traps on their construction sites.
Tengku Adnan said that their drainage systems were unable to cope with the 90mins of exceptionally heavy rain on Oct 30.
"Some 86.5mm of rain fell during that period compared to the average of between 50mm and 60mm rain," he said.
In the incident, muddy floodwaters inundated a 1km stretch of the Federal Highway just outside the Bangsar South City development site, heading from Mid Valley City towards the Sprint Highway's Kerinchi exit.
The flash floods only left a single lane passable to traffic, causing a massive jam on the highway, with several other areas in the Klang Valley also affected.
