Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) through Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS) is organising its 5th International Conference (SICON 5) from May 9-11 at the Lecture Theatre of Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) Extension Building, UBD.
It is themed 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Contemporary Islamic Studies: Possibilities in Light of the Traditional Ideas of Ijtihad, Tajdid, Islah and Bid'h.'
Fifteen international and national speakers will address the conference on its various sub-themes.
The international conference anticipates the attendance of government officials, lecturers, academics, intellectuals, students and is open to both local and international participants.
The papers presented will discuss innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to the contemporary teaching of Islamic studies, focusing on new ideas and insights of improvements to meet the needs of a contemporary society.
The academic conference also aims to be a thriving intellectual platform that provides space for meaningful discussions among not only local and international experts in academia, but also professionals in the government and private sectors.
The conference will feature discussions led by Islamic experts from all over the world such as Prof Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Kamal Hassan (International Islamic University Malaysia), Prof Dr. Muzaffer Seker (Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Turkey), Prof Dato Dr. Jamil Othman (International Institute of Islamic Thought, East and Southeast Asia), and Dr. Muhammad Mansur Ali (Ebrahim College, London and Cardiff University).
Discussions will also touch on entrepreneurship issues in relation to contemporary Islamic studies, which will be facilitated by Adna Shatriremie Haji Abdul Rahman (UBD School of Business and Economics Lecturer and Entrepreneurship Village Coordinator, UBD).
The conference is being held in collaboration with International Islamic University Malaysia (Centre for Islamic Economics), Malaysia; International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Turkey; Ebrahim College, London; the Islamic Academy, Cambridge, UK; and Fatoni University, Thailand.
Interested individuals are welcome to register for the conference. A registration fee will be charged, and it will cover conference materials, including attendance certificates, lunches and refreshments.
