A 42-year-old permanent resident woman was ordered by the Magistrate's Court to serve four months in jail immediately after she failed to convince the court of her ability to settle a $4,000 fine imposed for possession of cigarettes and liquor.
Nuruljannah binti Abdullah Argente @ Memenia arrived in her car at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 11.30am on April 30, 2016 from Limbang.
An inspection conducted on the defendant's car revealed she was in possession of six cartons and 43 packets of cigarettes and two bottles of liquor.
Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina bin Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Badaruddin neither gave a grace period nor an instalment plan to the defendant to settle her fine as she failed to convince the court with her means to pay.
The court also took into account failure of defendants in similar cases to take the punishments seriously after they were given long grace periods or lengthy instalment plans.
