BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Replying to a question on Brunei Darussalam citizens who fall sick in foreign countries, the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade explained among the duties and responsibilities of the country's representatives are to check and monitor the wellbeing of Brunei citizens and residents in the related foreign country.  To facilitate the foreign representatives in performing the monitoring duties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade recommends that the country's visitors who go abroad to register online or with the relevant representatives in those countries.

Yang Berhormat added it is the duty of the Consular Section to find out if any Brunei citizen or resident was facing problems or mishaps in the foreign country.  It is also a channel for providing assistance if required by the family or the party involved.

The issue explained the Minister of Health and the Minister of Education, included government scholarship students and private students studying abroad.  Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Mohd. Isham bin Jaafar, the Minister of Health said normally the policy only covers government staff or students.  However, there will be a case by case study and Yang Berhormat advises people on holiday outside the country to obtain insurance because it would make things easier when they are in a foreign country.

Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education said the welfare of students abroad is monitored on condition they must register with the related units and officers.  If a private student is not registered, his or her whereabouts would not be known and this would create problems if something undesirable happened.  The challenge is to improve awareness among private students abroad.  Wherever they are studying, they should register with the Students Unit or Education Attaches in the country where they study.
