Heavy Vehicles Carrying Excessive Load Is A Contributing Factor To The Problem Of Damaged Roads

According to the 2017 statistics, more 200 compounds were issued to drivers who carried excessive load.  Out of the total, nearly 60 percent of all heavy vehicle offences were recorded in 2017.  The issue of heavy vehicles carrying excessive load is viewed as a contributor to the problem of damaged roads.  The issue was shared at the Legislative Council session following complaints about damaged roads especially at the Serasa Industrial Area.

 

Still on the issue of the Serasa Industrial Area road, Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, the Minister of Communications explained the role of the ministry especially through the Land Transport Department, in monitoring commercial vehicles, particularly those found ferrying excessive load, which is considered as a contributor to road damage. The Minister added the 2017 Statistics showed 224 compounds were issued to drivers who carry excessive load.   Out of the 224 compounds, one hundred thirty three (133) involved Mukim Serasa area.  This represented almost 60 percent of all recorded heavy vehicle offences.  The Ministry of Communications in a "whole of nation" type of cooperation with the Ministry of Development, the Land Transport Department, the Public Works Department and other stakeholders has held a number of dialogues and discussions with private companies identified as the parties involved in the problem at Serasa Industrial Area.  This is intended to spread awareness and understanding of regulations and offences under the Road Act provision
