BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Yesterday's session also deliberated on the Ministry of Development's budget proposal for the Financial Year 2018/2019. Among the issues raised was the disposal of electronic waste or e-waste that is rising in the country. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development explained that although there are no specific location for e-waste disposal at each district, there are recycling companies registered under the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, JASTRE. These companies accept e-waste, which is then sorted for recycling. This is to ensure that the recycling and disposal processes are carried out in an orderly manner.

According to Yang Berhormat, this measure is in line with JASTRE's policy to enhance the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) management system. The department has implemented several initiatives to reduce waste disposal, especially those that can be recycled from electronics. This include roadshows, education, campaigns and promotions through social media with individuals, associations, non-government associations, and government agencies. The goal of this initiative is to raise the people's awareness on e-waste. JASTRE will explore the suitability of providing a designated site in the long run for keeping, dismantling and processing electronics for recycling before it is disposed.
