The Need to Understand the Definition of Culture in Brunei

 March 13th, 2018  |  10:36 AM  |   665 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

There is still a large number of Bruneian people that have yet to understand the definition of culture, and instead assume that culture is more towards singing, dancing and music, despite the fact that it is closely related to art and heritage. Even though the country has a rich and highly-valued culture, its existence is yet to be clear especially on its implementation, as there is no policy that can be used as a guideline. This was among the issues raised by Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit on the policies of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

In response to the query, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said the nation's cultural policy has been approved in the Cabinet Minister's meeting in 1991. According to Yang Berhormat, his Ministry has been and is currently reviewing the need to re-draft the policy of the country's need and the implementation's efficacy. There were three findings discovered based on research results and discussions with stakeholders. Firstly, the nation's cultural policy remain relevant and can still be used, as the policy's goal and direction is based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy. Secondly, the implementation of policy requires improvement and coordination so that it is in line with the Wawasan Brunei 2035. Thirdly, proposals for additional policies such as the film industry and creative economy policies require discussion with stakeholders.
