BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The green initiative organized by the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership, or STEP Centre aims to provide students at education institutions with the skills, knowledge, values and attitude needed to ensure a sustainable future. To strengthen this measure, the center has published a book entitled "Guide book for green school in Brunei Darussalam" in 2015 to encourage and create awareness on the best green practices at all education institutions in the country. Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education explained the matter in response to a question raised by Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Awang Haji Ash'ari on strengthening the involvement of schools in caring for the environment.

As a continuation to the book's publication, the Minister of Education said the STEP Centre last year conducted a study on the green school initiative to learn of the initiative's development and implementation status and obtain baseline data. The study reported that 104 schools have implemented green school programs or activities based on 5 themes from the guide book, namely energy, waste management, green school space, water, and health and cleanliness. The STEP center has also conducted awareness programs on water and energy conservation in cooperation with other agencies such as the Water Services Department and Public Works Department, Ministry of Development as part of efforts to raise awareness and knowledge on the environment and sustainable development. Yang Berhormat further stressed that the STEP Centre will continue to plan, implement and be open to suggestions on suitable programs from relevant education agencies on education for sustainable development, specifically those related to the environment and involve the school community.
