2nd Meeting Of The National Road Safety Council 2018

Since its establishment in 1977, the National Road Safety Council, MKKJR, has played a significant role in the efforts to reduce the rate of road accidents. However, over the past years, with the progress and rapid development specifically in land transport sector, the rate in particular involving casualties and injuries have shown a worrying trend and in need of specific attention to tackle them. Towards that, MKKJR has improved its policy and strategy. Speaking at the Second Meeting of the National Road Safety Council 2018 this morning, Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, the Minister of Communications explained that with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's titah, the membership of the council have been reformed.

 

In his speech, the Minister of Communications highlighted the changes of MKKJR chairman from the Permanent Secretary level to Minister level, namely the Minister of Communications followed by two Co-Deputy Chairman namely the Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications. The appointment of the new members of MKKJR from various prominent experiences and backgrounds from the Government and non-governmental bodies including the appointment of a Member of the Legislative Council, and also several positions who are promoted to the Permanent Secretary level for relevant Ministries to enhance road safety in the country. Yang Berhormat stressed that the Ministry of Communications and the Land Transport Department under the Secretariat of the MKKJR are striving to further strengthen the function and role of the MKKJR Secretariat.

 

The Minister of Communications highlighted that the road accidents trend is very worrying and in need of several coherent initiatives to be implemented by various parties with a specific direction led by the MKKJR including Data Analysis approaches to identify the main causes of accidents and also preventive approach geared towards reducing the number of accidents which involved fatalities and injuries.

 

In the efforts of MKKJR to implement the preventive approach, the role of the media is vital role in disseminating to the public any related allocations under the Roads Act and Regulations as well as to guide public thinking to always be responsible in understanding the prevention steps taken. The approaches among other things include to protect safety and well-being of all while on road.
