Aspects of old Malay manuscripts and dictionaries as well as Bruneian communities' heritage were discussed on the second day of the 2nd International Seminar on Research on Malay, SAPEMM. Presentations on Culture and Literature at the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement, ILIA of Universiti Brunei Darussalam focused on the ancient Malay's thoughts and culture as well as the gradual disappearance of the heritage due to the changing times.
Associate Proffesor Ampuan Dr Haji Brahim bin Ampuan Haji Tengah from the UBD's Academy of Brunei Studies and Faculty of Arts and Social Science in his second keynote address titled 'Manuskrip Melayu Brunei Terakhir: Pandangan dan Pemikiran dalam Meningkatkan Imej Tamadun Bangsa', among other things touched on old Malay manuscripts which reflect the thoughts, knowledge, behaviour and culture of past era Malays. He also explained how the last Brunei Malay Manuscripts reflect the Bruneian thoughts and views in aspects demanded by religion. This include advocating the eminence of Islam, respecting the elders and the special needs persons, good leadership, and efforts in safeguarding the country's security and sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong from the Islamic Malay Monarchy Executive Council's Secretariat Office in a working paper titled, 'BASIRAM: Warisan Masyarakat Brunei' focused on old Malay poetry heritage in the Bruneian community which is almost extinct because of modernisation and globalisation, the "BASIRAM' ceremony. He shared the special characteristics and stories in the Basiram poetry which also reflect elements of Malay, Islam and the Monarchy
The third keynote address by Professor Dr E. Ulrich Kratz from Germany's Goethe-University Frankfurt titled 'Kamus Bahasa Melayu Lama Ditinjau Semula' among other things highlighted the need for a new and comprehensive Malay language dictionary which contains words from the old Malay manuscripts. He also discussed the aspect of terminological references in the reviewed dictionary with the help of the available international language experts besides using the advantages offered by current electronic technology.
