The Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam welcomes anyone to be involved in the fisheries industry, whether it be through catch or aquaculture methods using cages or ponds. According to the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, opportunity is now wide open as the Ministry continues to offer new licenses for those interested to be involved in the industry, apart from providing facilities to acquire technology related to fisheries. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong stated the matter in an interview with RTB on the side-lines of the Launching Ceremony of a Tuna Processing Plant owned by a local company, Yamako Pacific Brunei Sendirian Berhad.
Touching on the company, Yang Berhormat explained that it uses a more sustainable fishing technique to avoid extinction, as it selects only the big fishes caught from the deep sea. This, Yang Behormat stressed, will enable the country to maintain its fish stock longer, as the small fishes are not caught but are allowed to grow.
Yang Berhormat went on to say that the fishes caught by the company itself and other companies, will be bought and processed at the plant before being exported to ASEAN countries, Japan, China and Hong Kong. Yamako Pacific is hoped to be able to produce catch fisheries and processed totalling nearly 50 million dollars by 2022 and create around 200 jobs in the coming years.
Yang Berhormat added that the increase in number of fishing vessels or boats will also provide other spin-offs as more processing plants will be operated in Brunei. However, Yang Berhormat said more focus will be put on aquaculture as it is more stable, and easier to control the output throughout the year as compared to using boats to catch fishes as there are certain times of the year when they will not be able to go out to sea, such as during high waves or strong winds.
