NATURAL NEWS

(Natural News) Now that summer is finally here, it seems like an exciting idea to spend more time in the great outdoors or let the sunshine enter through the open windows. However, pesky mosquitoes are also out to enjoy the influx of people at this time of the year.

There’s no need to panic, though. You can continue enjoying the sunny weather with these simple ways to repel mosquitoes:

Dress accordingly – If the plan is to play outside, go on a hike or camp in a site, it’s best to opt for jeans. While the hot weather makes it tempting to wear shorts, it leaves little to no protection from mosquitoes. Sleeveless tops may be more breezy but long-sleeved shirts can better shield the skin, and so do closed-toe shoes. In addition, this attire can also help deter other insects.

Create a barrier – At home, it’s essential to add screens to doors and windows, so even if they’re left open, mosquitoes still won’t be able to get in. That said, it’s still best to shut them and use the air conditioning instead. Moreover, remember to put a cover on things left in the backyard which can store water. Mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in stagnant water.

Use mosquito nets – This great invention is not only meant to be used when traveling. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of these nets for covering cribs, strollers, and baby carriers. Some even use it inside their own bedrooms. Mosquito nets not only keep mosquitoes out, but other pests and insects as well.

Light geraniol candles – More than citronella, a candle infused with geraniol works five times better in repelling mosquitoes. It can keep away 80 percent of mosquitoes within a 10-foot radius.

Meanwhile, here are some tips on how to be less desirable to the blood-sucking insects:

Put on fewer beauty products – Mosquitoes are said to be attracted to lotions, hairsprays, perfumes, and deodorants. In case it’s impossible to leave the house without such products, choose the ones with stronger scents like lavender, basil, or eucalyptus.

Munch on garlic – While it’s not a pleasant smell for your breath, garlic can mask the smell of carbon dioxide when exhaling – which attracts mosquitoes – thanks to the sulfur compound you get from eating garlic.

Eat fewer bananas – When the body metabolizes, the scent of banana is emitted through the skin and its distinct smell highly attracts mosquitoes.

Opt for light-colored clothing – These troublesome insects love dark colors. Wearing light-colored clothes will attract them less.

Take vitamin B – According to studies, people with vitamin B deficiency are more attractive to mosquitoes. In addition, excess vitamin B gets sweated out, and its scent is said to be repulsive to female mosquitoes.

Use vanilla scent – The sweet scent of vanilla can help mask the body odor of a person, which can attract mosquitoes.

It is also worth noting that the following are not recommended as mosquito repellants:

Witch hazel

Lemon juice

Apple cider vinegar
