BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA
Menglait FC are all but promoted to the Brunei DST Super League after nearest rivals BSRC FT could only muster a 3-3 draw with Al Idrus Junior FT in the Brunei DST Premier League at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
The league leaders still need one point to guarantee one of the automatic spots in Brunei's top tier but if fifth-placed IKLS fail to beat Setia Perdana in their postponed game or a meeting against Tabuan Under-17 whichever comes first they could start with the celebrations.
Al Idrus Junior, who overturned a 2-1 deficit to lead 3-2 late in the second half, are also within touching distance of fulfilling their dream of playing top flight football in the first time of asking requiring only a win from their last three games.
However, the team's assistant manager Awangku Kanzul Shah bin Pengiran Haji Damit insisted that his charges must win their remaining games after dropping their first points with Menglait breathing down their necks.
The muted silence at the final whistle probably showed what the draw meant to Al Idrus Junior and their desire to elicit an immediate response in the title race.
With BSRC the first side to complete this year's Brunei DST Premier League campaign, IKLS are the only side with a mathematical possibility to overhaul the promotion favourites although they need a miracle in overturning a huge goal swing.
Al Idrus could not afford to lose more points if they want to get their hands on the Brunei DST Premier League title with Menglait scoring an avalanche of goals, 11 to be exact, in their last couple of matches.
IKLS need "to win their remaining matches and hope that if they stay in contention should they are involved in a fixture against Setia Perdana before the league break, Rimba Star can do them a favour with a win against Menglait for a second successive year in July.
Menglait stay top with 18 points but Al Idrus remain third with 16 points outside the promotion places with three games to go while BSRC with 17 points are almost certain to miss out.
Al Idrus could have gone level on points with Menglait with a game in hand but Nur Hazwan Khan Asmah Khan's 81st minute goal for BSRC left them with little room of error heading into the final three fixtures.
The Brunei-Muara District League winners missed a glorious chance at the death from point blank range while on the other end a last ditch intervention crucially denied a late winner.
