BRUNEI-MUARA

Eighteen primary school teachers from the Ministry of Education, Singapore are currently in the country for a 10-day assimilation programme to share thoughts on teaching Malay and acquire first-hand experience at teaching in four primary schools in the Sultanate.

The delegation from Singapore made a visit to the Curriculum Development Department of the Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam yesterday as part of the Joint Working Group (JWG) programme.

In welcoming the teachers, Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Nawi, Director of Curriculum Development, said the objectives of the JWG, which was signed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) eight years ago, is to give the opportunity to the officers and teachers to gain knowledge and experiences, share thoughts with Malay teachers on the pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, learning and teaching and language activities for the improvement and development of the Malay language in Singapore.

The JWG participants also had the opportunity to learn more about the socio-cultural aspects of the local community and the various school activities.

Haji Abdul Rahman added that the Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam, as the host, has planned a mandatory teaching placement to several primary schools in the country and visits for the Singapore delegation.

He hoped that Singapore's Ministry of Education through its Malay language Centre would become more proactive for the development of the Malay language especially in giving support towards the establishment of a regional Malay Language Education Organisation and to hold language activity projects involving regional schools such as a Malay education forum, teaching and learning workshop and competition to strengthen regional Malay language education.

Meanwhile, Dayang Siti Faridah binti Omar, Head of Singapore delegation, said the visit aims to enhance and appreciate the Malay culture in the region and to develop a working network with institutions in the Sultanate.

She also hoped that teachers from both countries would learn new teaching techniques in the classroom.

Meanwhile, a briefing on the curriculum and assessment of Malay language in the primary level was presented by Awang Haji Tamam bin Haji Timbang, Head of Malay Language and Literature Unit of the Curriculum Development Department.

The Singapore delegation were also entertained with a poetry presentation by Dayang Nur Syahirah binti Haji Bakar, a Year 10 student from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and a video presentation by the Malay Language and Literature Unit.

Singapore has sent around 200 participants comprising Malay language teachers from primary schools since its inception eight years ago.
