CPI in April 2016 Decreased by 0.9 Per Cent

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April 2016 has shown a decrease by 0.9 per cent over March 2016. Meanwhile, the food and non-alcoholic beverages and the non-food index both decreased by 0.2 per cent and 1.1 per cent, respectively.
According to a press release, the main factor associated with the fall of the month-on-month CPI was a decrease in the transport index by 1.7 per cent, mainly caused by the lower prices of airline fare tickets. This followed by the decrease in furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance index by 2.4 per cent, due to the fall in prices of household textiles. Clothing and footwear also decreased by 4.6 per cent due to lower cost of several garments as well as clothing material.
On the other hand, restaurants and hotels index recorded an increase of less than 0.05 per cent due to higher prices of accommodation services. Meanwhile, the indices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; communication and education remain unchanged.
In comparison to April 2015, the CPI for April 2016 has decreased by 1.0 per cent, mainly due to fall in indices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 4.2 per cent; transport (2.1 per cent); and furnishings, household equipment and routine 'household maintenance (2.0 per cent).
CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period.
