Brunei Darussalam Trade Performance

Brunei Darussalam recorded the total trade increased in May by 12 point 5 per cent year-on-year. According to International Merchandise Trade statistics released by Department of Economic Planning and Development, DEPD, the total trade in May 2018 increased to 1,203 point 8 million dollar compared to 1,070 point 5 million dollar in May 2017.
According to the statistics, the total exports fell by 0 point 6 per cent year-on-year to 722 point 2 million dollar from 726 point 8 million dollar in May 2017 which was mainly attributed to the decrease in the export of Chemicals. However, the decrease was moderated by the increase in exports of Crude Oil and Liquefied Natural Gas LNG by 8 point 1 and 3 point 7 percent year-on-year, respectively.
The total imports of goods increased by 40 point 1 per cent year-on-year from 343 point 7 million dollar in May 2017 to 481 point 6 million dollar in May 2018. Meanwhile, the top five contributors of imports were Machinery and Transport Equipment, Manufactured Goods, Food, Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles and Chemicals.
In May 2018, the biggest export markets were Japan with 31 point 9 percent followed by Taiwan 17 point 3 percent, India 16 point 6 percent, Australia 12 point 8 percent and others.
Meanwhile imports by country of origin, the highest share came from China with 35 point 8 percent, followed by Malaysia 14 point 6 percent, Singapore 11 point 9 percent and others.
