The National Youth Day Cycling Recreation 2018 in conjunction with the 13th National Youth Day celebration is not only a healthy activity but can also unite the citizens and people specifically youths the country's youths. What makes it more meaningful is the participation of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in the event, which further enlivens the atmosphere in the capital. The recreation activity which began and ended at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien is an added value to the weekend programme, Bandarku Ceria.
The participation of the people from all levels of the society showed a community that takes the issue of health seriously and have made sports activities as a healthy lifestyle especially youths who will become the future pioneers.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by the cabinet ministers led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs.
Also in attendance were His Majesty's sons, brother and daughter;
- His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office;
- His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik;
- His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel,
- His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah; and
- Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah.
The cycling recreation flag off began as soon as the air horn was sounded. Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, permanent Secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries were among those taking part in the cycling event. The National Youth Day Cycling Recreation is one of the sidelines of the 13th National Youth Day celebrated on the 1st of August.
The over 11 kilometre cycling event around Bandar Seri Begawan passed through several main roads namely Jalan Masjid Omar 'Ali Saifuddien, Jalan Kianggeh, Jalan Sekolah, Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Perdana Menteri, Jalan Haji Basir, Jalan Sultan and ending at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien.
His Majesty's presence and participation in the cycling recreation together with some one thousand cyclists is a platform for the people to carry out physical activities with the monarch and practise it towards a healthy and active life.
Such an event not only increases youth involvement in sports events, but can also develop the sector in establishing a healthy nation. This is in line with the proposal of His Majesty's Government of establishing a more healthy population as the future generation for a more sustainable nation development.
The National Youth Day Cycling Recreation was jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; Ministry of Home Affairs; Ministry of Religious Affairs; Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism; Ministry of Defence; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Education AND Ministry of Communications, with the involvement of other ministries as well as the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Association. The event shows that sport has been given the same recognition, respect and encouragement as other social sectors in order to achieve the national development goal, unity and lasting stability.
Following the cycling event, His Majesty then watched a march past by more than 50 youth cyclists comprising Higher Educational Institutes, Youth Development Centre and Alumni of the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme, SSEAYP, as well as individual youths. His Majesty also received a Pasambah.
Such an event proves that the country has successfully utilised sports as a platform for cementing national integration that goes beyond religion and race.
