Data an Integral Part of Modern Businesses

KG JERUDONG, BRUNEI-MUARA

"Data is going to be the new electricity". Such is its importance that, by adopting a data culture, many companies have managed to transform their businesses for the better.

This was stated by Rena Chai, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer for Southeast Asia New Markets, who delivered a presentation during Microsoft (B) Sdn Bhd's unveiling of the latest SQL Server 2016 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday.

She further mentioned that the world is now going through its fourth industrial revolution, with the first of the initial three being in 1784 when steam, water and mechanical production came into play.

She explained that the second industrial revolution was in 1870 with the introduction of electricity, division of labour and mass production, while the third was in 1969, when computers, electronics, IT and automated production were introduced to enhance productivity.

"Now we're going through the fourth industrial revolution, data, which began in 2014, with the tonnes of data coming into the world, because we have devices that help us connect with people," she added.

"We have IoT (Internet of Things) devices that are coming out in various shapes and sizes and in different applications, so we are seeing a lot more data coming into our world. Not just for business use, but for your own personal use - everyone wants to be connected."

She highlighted that while all the changes in technology and cloud technology have enabled a lot of this, the fundamental part is data. "Data is going to be the new electricity, or you can say that data is going to be the new currency. So we can't do without data anymore, and more and more data is coming in," she said.
