BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

National Sports Associations should ensure and make thorough planning for their nominated athletes or those already selected and listed by the Executive Committee and the Assessment and Selection Secretariat to represent the country's sports contingent. His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council in a sabda says the matter is very essential to the athletes in their preparations for any competition. His Royal Highness also advises sports associations not to simply depend on assistance from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports but they should also be proactive in seeking solutions and take measures in the interest of the national athletes. His Royal Highness stresses they should not just hope for "windfalls". The sabda was delivered during the Post-Mortem Meeting on the 18th Asian Games, Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia 2018, yesterday morning. The meeting took place at the Conference Room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

The event began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili bin Haji Mohidin.

Yang Berhormat (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in his welcoming address highlighted the importance of the post-mortem to efforts towards improving the performance of the national athletes.

In the sabda, His Royal Highness advises the associations to give full attention to athletes who have the potential to participate at higher level competitions. This is to enhance their performance and ability to give stronger competition. His Royal Highness adds the athletes and their parents too, have high hopes for their success, and it is the responsibility of the associations to make more detailed and organised planning because only the associations and coaches know the real potential of their athletes.

Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports who is also the Chairperson of the National Athletes Assessment and Selection Executive Committee explained the purpose of the meeting. This included identifying weaknesses and shortcomings which need to be solved to enable all the relevant parties to take follow-up actions.

The meeting heard a report from the 18th Asian Games, Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia 2018 Contingent. In the report, Dayang Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim, the Chef-de-Mission made several proposals including for sports associations to carry out a 'Performance Analysis' through the "Techniques and Tactics" video. This method uses a scientific approach to help overcome any weakness and to improve the performance of the athletes. 15 National Athletes participated in the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia from the 18th of August to the 2nd of September. During the games, Brunei Darussalam participated in Weightlifting, Equestrian, Golf, Karate, Athletics, Pencak Silat and Wushu."
