The expanding use of online technologies can bring additional pressures and young people living in such situations are particularly vulnerable to mental distress and illness. Yang Berhormat Awang Iswandy bin Ahmad, member of the legislative council stressed the matter at the launch of a Mental Health Awareness Campaign yesterday morning at Laksamana College of Business.
Yang Berhormat Awang Iswandy said, much can be done to help build mental resilience from an early age to help prevent mental distress and illness among adolescents and young adults, as well as manage and recover from mental illness. Prevention begins with being aware of and understanding the early warning signs and symptoms of mental illness. Parents and teachers can also help build the life skills of children and adolescents to help them cope with everyday challenges at home and at school.
The campaign is a project of the Mental Health Initiative and Drive - MhIND initiative by Belia Warriors, comprising 6 government officers who are part of the 3rd Cohort of the Young Executive Programme organised by the Civil Service Institute and Public Services Department. Mental health issue was chosen as the main focus of the project due to the two mental health problems which have been identified namely stress and extreme depression. 15 booths were set up related to issues of mental health. The campaign will also be conducted at Universiti Teknologi Brunei, UTB on Wednesday and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, UNISSA on the 13th of October from 8:30 in the morning till 4:30 in the afternoon.
