The Internet World Statistics showed that nearly 78-percent of users, especially children, who seriously addicted to the internet. The statistics also said that mental illness is expected to become the second biggest health concern after cardiovascular disease by 2020. In this regard, the Permanent Secretary of Core Education, at the Ministry of Education, called on counsellors to broaden their horizon and widen their skills in various fields.
Speaking yesterday morning at the National Counselling Seminar 2018, Doctor ShamsiahZurainiKanchanawatibinti Haji Tajudin believed that it is their core responsibility in tackling mental, emotional and psychological aspects. She urged counsellors to play a pivotal role in assisting today's generation to adapt a quality and happy well-being. In her remarks, she also noted that the counselling services has been in Brunei for 30 years. At this juncture, she congratulated PERKAB for its relentless effort in providing syariah-compliance services and ensures that the counselling professionalism continue to progress in line with the community's expectations, based on the Malay Islamic Monarch concept and a Zikir Nation.
Doctor ShamsiahZurainiKanchanawati also called on individuals who face emotional instability problems to seek help from the professionals. Internal problems should been seen from the positive view, adding that it does not mean that the person in weak.
The ceremony ran concurrently with the launching of the PERKAB Code of Ethics. The regulations is a basis and guidelines in implementing quality counselling services and professionalism.
A keynote address titled "the speciality of counselling from the Islamic perspective" was delivered by Emeritus Professor Dato Doctor Amir bin Awang, Fellow Academic at the Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, Malaysia. Four working papers were presented at the seminar. The one-day seminar was attended by officers and staff of government agencies, education institutions, private firms and individuals. It carries the theme "towards implementing the counselling services based on Islam in Brunei Darussalam". Among those present was Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Member of the Legislative Council who is also the Penghulu of MukimTelisai.
