His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China also held a bilateral meeting and witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and Bilateral Agreement.
The ceremony took place at Baitul Mesyuarah, Istana Nurul Iman. Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office. His Majesty in his titah stated that the State Visit of the President of the People's Republic of China is an opportunity for the monarch to renew their personal friendship since the first meeting in 1999.
Meanwhile, His Excellency the President of the People's Republic of China in his speech among other matters hoped that the relations between the People's Republic of China and Brunei Darussalam will continue. His Excellency was also impressed with the organised administration and provision of modern infrastructure in Brunei Darussalam, signifying a peaceful country. His Excellency added that despite differing situations, both countries have the same desires to develop their respective countries.
His Majesty and His Excellency then witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and Bilateral Agreement. The Bilateral Cooperation Plan on Improvement of Joint Cooperation in the Framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative between the governments of His Majesty and the People's Republic of China were signed by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doktor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy; while signing on behalf of the government of the People's Republic of China was His Excellency He Lifeng, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the government of His Majesty and the government of the People's Republic of China on the establishment of the Joint Steering Committee was signed by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs representing His Majesty's government while on behalf of the People's Republic of China government was His Excellency Wang Yi, State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Meanwhile the signing of the Protocol to Expand Memorandum of Understanding between the government of His Majesty represented by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board, Ministry of Home Affairs and Nanjing Municipal People's Government, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China. Signing on behalf of His Majesty's government was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doktor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs; while the government of the People's Republic of China was represented by His Excellency Zhang Jinghua, member of the Standing Committee of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Party Secretary of CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee.
His Majesty and the President of the People's Republic of China then proceeded to Baitur Rahmah, Istana Nurul Iman for a State Luncheon. Also in attendance were;
- His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office;
- His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik;
- His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen;
- His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah; and
- Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The People's Republic of China is Brunei Darussalam's major partner in trade and investment as well as a source foreign Direct Investment. Brunei Darussalam hopes to learn from the People's Republic of China in developing the small and medium enterprise market. Both countries also hope to further strengthen cooperation in agriculture and fisheries. In connectivity, the relations of both countries have improved through direct flights between Brunei Darussalam and Beijing. The joint ventures between the two governments and people, will further strengthen the friendship and cooperation ties. The People's Republic of China sees Brunei Darussalam as an honest and trustworthy partner for mutual development.
