Members of the public witnessed an action packed and entertaining arena performance during the 55th anniversary celebration of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), held at the Parade Square of the Defence Academy RBAF in Kampong Tanah Jambu yesterday.
As a curtain raiser for the arena performance, the first show was a hostage rescue and evacuation operation demonstrated by the regiment team with assistance from the Royal Brunei Air Force, Gurkha Reserve Unit, and the Special Forces Platoon.
The scenario revolved around intelligence that the location of the enemy was near the top of a hill on the left side of the arena, therefore the authority of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces then ordered the Special Forces Platoon to extract a hostage who was believed to be in the enemy location, guarded by five hostiles.
The special forces regiment entered the operation area by air on board a Blackhawk helicopter and during the attack, a hostile managed to escape, thus the leader of the operation requested assistance from the Special Forces Platoon, comprising the Cut Off Team and K9 Unit of the Gurkha Reserve Unit, to track down the remaining hostiles who were hiding around the attacked area.
This was followed by the deployment of the Cut Off Team by fast roping technique from a Blackhawk S70i from Squadron 1 of the Royal Brunei Air Force. On the left side of the arena, another rope deployment technique called rappelling was demonstrated.
The last hostile was then seen running from the Gurkha Reserve Unit but was outrun and caught soon after by the team's trained Belgian Malinois dog.

The basic individual firearm handling demonstration was carried out by members of the Advanced Infantry of the Royal Brunei Land Forces, where they underwent training using firearms accompanied by physical training. This demonstration featured soldiers undergoing basic recruit training.
The 'D' Company Unit of the Royal Brunei Land Forces then carried out the self-defence combat demonstration, which was introduced in 2005, aimed at teaching the soldiers to practise a combat techniques that are simple yet can cause sufficient bodily damage to enemies.
