A 61-year-old woman, traveling on a passenger boat with ten others including the boat skipper, died following a collision with another passenger boat near Kampung Kasuapan at Gaya Island on Wednesday.

Kamariah binti Aminulla, from Kg Pulau Gaya, died in the ambulance while being rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 by paramedics.

It was learnt that the incident happened when the deceased and nine other passengers were on their way to Kg Kasuapan from Kota Kinabalu when the passenger boat they were on collided with another boat that was heading back to Jesselton Jetty at around 11 pm on Jun 1. The collision reportedly resulted in all the passengers including the two boat skippers to be thrown into the sea. All the passengers who were thrown into the sea were however safely rescued by villagers from Kg Kasuapan except for the deceased who reportedly drowned following the collision.

She was found by villagers few minutes later and was immediately rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead minutes before she arrived.

Meanwhile, city police chief, ACP M. Chandra, confirmed the incident and said both boat skippers had been detained to assist the police.

Initial police investigation appear to indicate no element of any foul play in the boat collision while the case has been classified as a sudden death report.
