Initiatives Towards Environmental Sustainability and Green Economy

Brunei Darussalam's initiatives towards environmental sustainability and green economy among others include the implementation of 'No Plastic Bag Everyday' initiative commencing 1st January 2019 and the country's active action on mitigation strategies that have been developed to help meet the national climate change target towards meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Insinyur Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development, stated the matter today at the 3rd Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia and the Pacific in the Republic of Singapore.

 

The forum was opened with the welcoming address by His Excellency Masagos Zulkifli, Minister of the Environment and Water Resources, Republic of Singapore. The forum's objective was to discuss strategies and policies, exchange views and share experiences on the theme 'Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production'. While in the Republic of Singapore, the Minister of Development held separate bilateral meetings with Her Excellency Yeo Bee Yin, the Malaysian Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, and Mr Putera Parthama, the Director General for Watershed and Protection Forest Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia. A number of issues were discussed aimed at strengthening relations that will benefit both countries with respect to the environment.

 

At the end of the forum, a ministerial outcome or Chair's Summary was adopted that reflect policy perspective and commitments in Asia Pacific to address the theme of the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly. Also in the Brunei Darussalam delegation was Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abd Razak, the Permanent Secretary for Planning, Land-Use and Environment at the Ministry of Development, and Dayang Martinah Hj Tamit, Acting Director, of Environment, Parks and Recreation. The UN Environment Assembly is the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment and the fourth UN Environment Assembly will be held on the 11th to the 14th of March in Nairobi.
