​The choice of a healthy lifestyle is dependent on oneself aided by a healthy socio-culture and physical environment. Apart from that, the Minister of Health explained, the public need to be wise in making healthy dietary choices to be prepared at home or even while outside the home. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham Bin Haji Jaafar stressed the matter in the message in conjunction with the World Cancer Day Celebration. Yang Berhormat added that the public must be determined to be active by integrating physical activities in their daily schedule and urged the public to together be more responsible in maintaining their health.

Yang Berhormat also urged for the people in the country to take proactive measures in preventing the effects of cancer with early diagnosis through health screenings so that it can be treated at an early stage. Individuals with a history of cancer in the family and have risk factors are advised to undergo health checks periodically.

The Minister of Health also called on the importance of prevention and early intervention for cancer and added that it should be disseminated to all citizens and residents in Brunei Darussalam. Yang Berhormat said that in 2017, some 625 residents in the country were diagnosed with cancer, of which the disease has caused 385 deaths.

World Cancer Day is celebrated every 4th of February. As in other countries, Brunei Darussalam is also actively raising awareness and taking several measures and actions to prevent and reduce the effects of cancer. The World Cancer Day theme from this year until 2021 is 'I AM AND I WILL'. The theme portrays that 'I and YOU' are heroes for cancer awareness and role as well as high commitment which are required for every individual to together take action in reducing the risk of cancer.
