City Hall is in the midst of studying the feasibility of starting pilot projects to implement the yet to be mandatory segregation, separation and recycling program.
However, Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said the project might take another few years to fully materialize as what had happened in the other West Malaysian states.
“All local authorities in Sabah have been advised to do this operation so we are still in the process of finding the best way to implement,” said Yeo.
“If there is no penalty, nobody will follow it strictly so we are looking into it.
“I have asked the director general to look into the fine tuning of the segregation. We will likely pick an experimental area, pilot project, shopping centre or one stall area where we do the full separation,” he added.
The Mayor reiterated that Kota Kinabalu alone produced 500 tonnes of rubbish a day but the total combined rubbish from the city and Tuaran, Penampang, Kota Belud and Putatan and Papar amounted to 800 tonnes per day.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department and the minister- in-charge of City Hall (DBKK) Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah said all the sectors should work together in realizing such a goal.
“Tell me what kind of ideas that we can use. We have no problem, we listen to all the sectors how to make it better,” said Yong.
“We, the Mayor and DBKK, are willing to listen to people who have good ideas. We can work together in order to make it a reality,” he affirmed.
Yong added that the state government was also looking into the successful implementations of similar programs in other countries such as Taiwan and America, where the people are integral in the success of the program in the developed countries.
