Basic Sign Language Workshop

 February 26th, 2019  |  08:52 AM  |   399 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A Basic Sign Language Workshop has been held in an effort to provide exposure to the public on the importance and use of sign language to communicate with hearing impaired persons.  The workshop was held by the Community Development Department, JAPEM with the cooperation of Special Education Unit, UPK, Ministry of Education; Otorhinolaryngology Section, ENT, Audiology and Teachers for Hearing Impaired Services, Ministry of Health; and Hearing Impaired Association, OKP as well as student volunteers from the University Technology Brunei, UTB.   The opening ceremony of the workshop took place this afternoon at the Pusat Bahagia in Kampung Pulaie.

The workshop was launched by Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The ceremony commenced with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Muhammad Saufaqrul Waie bin Amir, a person with hearing impairment.

Awang Khairul Anwar bin Haji Johari, President of the OKP Association who used sign language in his welcoming remarks explained the workshop was a follow up of  last year's OKU International Day Forum and envisioned by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.  He added that, by only giving 'salam' to the OKP is enough for them to feel acceptance from the community and this initiative will further boost their spirit to learn sign language.

The ceremony was highlighted with a performance from the Hearing OKU with members of the OKP Association; students; trainers and officers and staff of Pusat Bahagia.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports also viewed a basic sign language workshop. The workshop is divided into 6 sessions which will be from this month until November 2019.  75 participants comprising representatives of Higher Education Institutions, the private sector, parents and Hearing OKU family members as well as individuals participate in the workshop's first 3 day session.
