Special Lane for Cyclists on Highways

The first meeting of the 15th Legislative Council Session today approved the budget for the Ministry of Development for the Financial Year 2019/2020 amounting to 218 million 38 thousand dollars. The council also deliberated on the proposed budget for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Earlier, in the morning session, the council deliberated on several questions that have been given notice. Among them was the query on the short and long term plans to provide a special lane for cyclists on the highways raised by Yang Berhormat Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit. In responding to this, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Info-communications explained that several efforts are being carried out by the government and relevant parties to facilitate cyclists in the country. This includes 'Share the Road' campaigns and initiatives headed by the National Road Safety Council, MKKJR and their strategic partners.

 

The Minister of Transport and Info-communications said with the Share the Road initiative, cyclists are urged to adhere to cycling regulations such as wearing visible or light coloured clothing, especially at night, using white light in the front of the bicycle and red light at the back, installing and using bells or horns, cycling on the left side of the road following traffic flow and cycling with consideration on the roads. In the long term, several ministries are working together to coordinate the initiative such provision of road infrastructure with the Ministry of Development and the Ministry of Transport and Info-communications through the MKKJR on the aspects of road safety and connectivity including the safety of road users such as drivers, motorcycle and bicycle riders as well as pedestrians. The MKKJR plays a major role in the provision of policies and strategies using a Whole of Nation Approach with the involvement of various agencies and multi-stakeholders in tackling road safety issues in Brunei Darussalam.
