Brunei Darussalam's citizens and residents receive Universal Health Coverage from the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Ministry of Health with the provision of easily accessible and obtainable health services in the four districts. This includes the provision of 14 comprehensive health centres, 4 health clinics, 2 flying doctor services and 3 mobile clinics.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, the Minister of Health, underscored the matter in the message in conjunction with world Health Day which is celebrated every 7th of April. According to Yang Berhormat, the health centres provided at the community level are comprehensive and in-line with the 'One-Stop Health Centre' concept that provides basic health care focused under one roof, aimed at enhancing quality and efficacy by providing a more comfortable and conducive environment near to the community.
In essence, Basic Health Care has a vital role in Universal Health Coverage and also in healthcare holistically as Basic Health Care covers the life-long health requirements of an individual, which is pre-natal, infancy and young-age, adulthood until the end of life. In this regard, the Brunei Darussalam government's commitment towards Basic Health Care in the country and Universal Health Coverage can be seen through the country's achievement in the Millennium Development Goals 2015. Brunei Darussalam has also fulfilled a number of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 targets. The achievements include a clear decrease in the Maternal Mortality Rate since the 1960's; and decrease in the Under-5 Mortality Rate.
This year, the World Health Organisation has once again selected 'Universal Health Coverage' as the theme aimed at enhancing understanding on the Universal Health Coverage concept as well as encouraging and promoting actions that can be taken by all parties worldwide to contribute towards realising the Universal Health Coverage concept globally. The Minister of Health hoped that this year's World Heath Day will act as a platform for the people of Brunei Darussalam to better appreciate their own health and not to waste the facilities provided by His Majesty's government. Health professionals and workers also play a vital role in together preparing to educate patients on ways to look after their health, coordinate care and support patients' needs.
