CIPTA Awards Ceremony

​His Royal Highness Prince Dr Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei yesterday morning graced the Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Products and Technical Advancements, CIPTA Awards 2019. Apart from inspiring youths and the public to develop creative products, processes or technology in line with the country's aspiration, the 8th Crown Prince CIPTA Awards aimed to encourage inventions and innovations in the country and recognise the creative talents of youths and the public. The ceremony took place at the Dewan Serambi Suluh, Tarindak D'Seni in Bandar Seri Begawan.

 

 Upon arrival His Royal Highness the Crown Prince as the patron of the Crown Prince CIPTA Award was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education; Doctor Hajah Noor Maya binti Haji Md Salleh, Acting Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei and Patric Girard, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad.

 

The ceremony began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah and doa selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.

 

 Doctor Hajah Noor Maya in her welcoming speech said that the development of a workforce that is creative and innovative, skilled in science and technology as well as able to work efficiently in intelligent surroundings, is the main factor for development and changes occurring in today's industry which is in line with ICT development. In realising this technological trend and opportunity, Universiti Teknologi Brunei plays an important role in nurturing the interest towards education and learning in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or in short STEM. Apart from that, the university has also taken on the role of providing platforms to produce high quality inventions and innovations, namely through the Crown Prince CIPTA competition.

 

This year's Crown Prince CIPTA Award is themed 'Industry 4.0 : Convergence of Innovation' which is in support of the aspiration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in facing the 4th Industrial Challenge. It also contributes towards realising Wawasan Negara 2035. The biennial competition was organised by Universiti Teknologi Brunei with the cooperation and sponsorship of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad.

 

 The process and activity as well as judging criteria for the Crown Prince CIPTA Competition 2019 in line with the development of scientific research and innovation culture found in many ASEAN countries. Awang Hirman bin Haji Abu, member of the competition's Judging Committee in the judging comment explained that a part of the Crown Prince CIPTA Award products are very interesting and have standards that can improve life quality and have the potential to be developed to be marketed.

 

 His Royal Highness presented prizes to the winners of the Crown Prince CIPTA Awards 2019. There were no first and second place winners for the Creating New Product, Process or Technology category, however third place went to Doctor Haji Sharul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin and Dayang Nur Hamizah binti Haji Awang Harun with the project, Water Leakage Detection and Management. They received a cash prize of two thousand dollars, certificates and trophy.

 

The Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology category was won by Awang Sufre bin Haji Muhammad with his project Variable Speed Multi Grits Sander Machine,VSGS. Awang Sufre received a six thousand dollar cash prize, a certificate and trophy. Second place went to Awang Abdul Hafiz bin Abdul Wahab with the project, Spotgenic: Plant disease detection system. Awang Abdul Hafiz received a cash orize of four thousand dollars, a certificate and trophy. Meanwhile the Depo Device project invented by Ak Mohammad Zulfikri bin Pengiran Haji Zulkifly, Muhammad Amirul Fahmiin bin Abdullah and Wan Nur Zahidah binti Metussin placed third. They received a two thousand dollar cash prize, certificate and trophy.

 

 Meanwhile, there was no first place winner in the Creating New or Modifying existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors category. Second place went to Dayang Janelle Joyce Ampongan Perez, Awang Muhammad Haziq Safwan bin Sheran and Dayang Nurayezha Barasi Nurul Islam from Seri Mulia Sarjana School with the project Eco BN-Waste Management Bin. They received a cash prize of two thousand dollars, certificate and trophy. Meanwhile, the Blind Assist Sensory Suit, BASS project invented by Dayang Adriana binti Masidey, Awang Mohammad Dzy Anaqy bin Rudy and Dayang Siti Nurfatin Aleeya binti Jasmy from Berakas Secondary School came in third. They received one thousand dollars in cash, certificate and trophy.

 

The 'My Penpal - Pen for Dyslexics' project showcased by Awang Jordan Hee Shan Yung, Loo Chun Yung and Sharlaine Tan Qi Jie from Chung Ching Middle School, Seria won the SMART JUNIOR competition and received one  thousand dollars and a certificate. Bfit Shoes: Burn the fat and be fit project showcased by Dayang Saariisha Theventharan, Awang Yong Bong You and Awang Ling Wei Ming from Chung Hua Middle School took second place. They received eight hundred dollars and a certificate. Meanwhile third place was won by 'Innovative Green Energy Collector' project created by Awang Lugman Al-Hakim bin Musa, Dayang Eta Nurzafirah binti Junaidi and Dayang Nor Zaidah binti Zainal Abidin from Berakas Secondary School. They received five hundred dollars and certificate. The Smart Junior Competition is for lower secondary school students aged between 12 to 14 years.

 

 There were no winners for the ASEAN category for New Invention and Innovation. The ASEAN Young Inventor category was won by Siti Nurhasya Dinie binti Abdul Mahdi, Che Ku Ahmad Habib bin Che Ku Ahmad Amir dan Adam Fitri bin Mohd Shariff Lei, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tengku Lela Segara, Terengganu Darul Iman with the project, TE-Ractor. They won three thousand dollars, certificate and trophy.

 

His Royal Highness then received a pesambah from the Crown Prince CIPTA 2019 Organising Committee.

 

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then viewed the exhibition. The competition provides a platform for the highly creative and interested inventors to produce innovative products that are beneficial and of high quality for the well-being of mankind globally. The competition saw 41 participations, 14 of them from ASEAN member nations and 27 local participation. Meanwhile 2 international judges and four local judges from institutions and industries of various expertise judged the competition.

 

His Royal Highness' presence showed the Crown Prince's attention and care towards the development of inventions and innovations in today's Science, Technology and Engineering fields. Since its inauguration in 2005, the competition has instilled and developed research, and the cultures of science, engineering and technology to youths and the public aside from instilling cooperation relations between Brunei Darussalam and the ASEAN member countries.
