STOCKHOLM

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Wednesday urged leaders in Europe and elsewhere to share responsibility for the "global problem" of migrants fleeing the Syrian war, local media reported.

"This is not a European question, but a global problem. I urge all leaders to show their generosity and openness," Ban said in Stockholm, daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported.

Ban described his discussions with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven as "very constructive" and said one solution would be to secure pathways for those migrants to apply for asylum.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven stressed the importance of the UN in international affairs, dubbing the organization the "most important international platform."

Sweden, received some more than 150,000 asylum applications during 2015, decided in November to grant temporary residence permits for most groups that are granted asylum in the country.
