These cute baby squirrels had to be rescued after getting stuck to each other.

A member of the public found the four animals in woods along the A689 in Wynyard, Stockton-on-Tees.

When he saw their tales had become entangled he immediately called the RSPCA for help.

RSPCA inspector Clare Wilson said: ‘We find wildlife in some very strange predicaments but this sounded particularly odd, and it definitely was!

She took them to Vets Now Middlesbrough because she was worried about their sharp teeth potentially injuring her.

Ms Wilson added: ‘The vet nurses put towels over the squirrels so they felt safer.

‘They seemed to realise we were trying to help them as they stayed quiet while the vet worked to untangle them.

‘It turned out once the twigs and leaves were removed that the four tails were all literally plaited together!’

The squirrels were not injured and are now at a local vets until they can be transferred to a wildlife centre.

It is hoped they will be released back into the wild soon.
