Choosing a baby name can be tough, but at some point both you and your partner will settle on the perfect choice.

One woman thought she and her boyfriend had done just that and she was excited to finally have found the right name for her unborn little girl.

But when she confided in her mother what the name was - things soon came crashing down.

It turns out her parents had a shocking connection to the name she had selected, and now they want her to pick another one

Writing on Reddit's Am I The A**hole forum, an unnamed woman admitted that she and her partner had decided to call their daughter Catalina.

She said: "Last night when I was talking to my mom she asked me if we had thought of any baby names. I tell her that I have always wanted to name my daughter Catalina as I think the name is beautiful.

"My mom is very serious and insists that we can not name her that and to please think of something new.

"I said no, I love that name and so does my boyfriend. My mum breaks down and tells me the story."

It turns out that a few years before she had been born, her father had an affair with a woman named Catalina.

The relationship was brief, but it almost destroyed her parent's marriage and as such the memories are too painful for her mother.

This revelation has left the woman feeling conflicted: "I love that name... But I would be inflicting emotional damage on my mom.

"Boyfriend tells me mom has to get over it, because it is our daughter. I am leaning towards naming my daughter Catalina. Am I the a**hole?"

More than 800 people commented on the post sharing their thoughts on the situation.

One person replied: "You are the a**hole. I know it's your kid and you can choose any name you wish but do you really want your mom to be reminded of something painful every time she sees or hears her name?"

Another wrote: "What's going to happen after your daughter finds out that she's named after the same woman who her grandfather had an affair with?

"It's just ugly, move on from it."

A third added: "Avoid the name and things will be fine for everyone. Use it and expect drama."

After reading through the comments, the woman eventually decided it would be wrong to use the name and has since decided to find a variation of it, such as Cat.
