Dengue Kills 25, Infects Over 10,000

VIENTIANE
(KPL) Over 10,700 people across the country have been infected with dengue virus, with Champassak hard hit with 2,416 infection cases and five deaths reported since the beginning of January, according to the Ministry of Health.
The number of dengue death toll in Savannakhet is higher than those reported in other provinces.
Eight people have reportedly died of dengue in Savannakhet, Six in Vientiane Capital, five in Champassak, three in Saravan, two in Khammuan and one in Borikhamxay.
Vientiane Capital has reported 2,018 infection cases, Savannakhet 1,813, Saravan 1,367, Khammuan 1,112, Attapeu 717, and Borikhamxay 418.
Luang Namtha has reported 338 infection cases, Vientiane did 316, Sekong 185, Xayaboury 154, Luang Prabang 65, Xaysomboun 48,Oudomxay 12, Borikhamxay 6, and Xieng Khuang 5.
No infection cases of dengue have been reported in Phongsaly and Huaphan.
Dr Khamla Choumlivong, Deputy Director of the Sethathirath Hospital has urged the public to take preventive measures through observing simple routines such as covering and cleaning indoor and outdoor water containers.
“Four different types of dengue virus have been known to cause dengue hemorrhagic fever. All types of the virus are transmitted by infected mosquitoes,” said Dr Khamla.
She also warned the general public not to buy medicines to take by themselves when they are sick.
