Chile's forward Eduardo Vargas said on Monday that his team once again started playing like they did when they won the Copa America tournament at home in 2015.
Vargas was referring to Chile's overwhelming 7-0 victory over Mexico on Saturday. The win allowed the South American team to go through to the semi-finals of the 2016 Centennial Copa America tournament which is currently taking place in the United States.
"We didn't get off to a good start but I think that match after match we became more confident and now we are the same Chile from the last Copa America," the player told local daily Las Ultimas Noticias in Monday's edition.
Vargas is one of the highest goalscorers of this year's Copa America with six goals so far. Four of these goals were scored during the match against Mexico.
The forward for German side 1899 Hoffenheim said that the first goals he scored against Mexico on Saturday was the most important.
"If I scored a goal against Mexico, I had said that I would dedicate it to my Mum as she recently suffered a heart attack. For that reason, when I scored my first goal, I thought of her," said Vargas, who also used to play for Chile's Universidad and Italy's Napoles.
"It was a great goal. Alexis (Sanchez) passed the ball to me, I beat the defender and then kicked it in the back of the net with my left (foot). It was a lovely goal because of the play that went before it. I would place it as number one in the ranking (for the best goal of the tournament)," added Vargas.
Chile will face Colombia in the continental tournament's semi-final on June 22. The other semi-final game is between Argentina and the United States.
