Bruneian Woman Jailed 30 Months Over 18 Charges of Cheating

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The High Court yesterday declined an application for the stay of execution of sentence by a local woman who was sentenced to jail for 30 months after pleading guilty to 18 charges of cheating and using forged documents.

Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong turned down Vivi Yanti binti Haji Mohd Jali's application as there was no special reason or exceptional circumstances in the case for the court to consider granting the stay of sentence.

Vivi Yanti was sentenced for the term with effect from April 21, 2016 by the Magistrate's Court after it declined the counsel's application for a stay of execution of the sentence.

Vivi Yanti's counsel Rozaiman Abdul Rahman submitted the application on the ground that the defendant has a seven month-old baby to take care of.

The baby had stayed with Vivi Yanti for a week in prison, but now the baby has been separated from her.

Vivi Yanti was found guilty of duping six individuals out of their money with the promise that she was able to secure various government tenders for them as well as using forged documents between 2011 and 2014 and making $29,380 in total from the scam.
