Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), through its Division of Student Affairs and in collaboration with the Religious and Spiritual Unit of the Student Representative Council, on Thursday held the opening ceremony for the programme titled 'Awakening the Ummah' themed 'Hamasah Asy-Shabab'.
Present as the guest of honour of the ceremony was Dr. Haji Norarfan Bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA. Also in attendance were senior officers, deans, deputy deans, lecturers and students of the university.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat followed by a speech delivered by Awang Abdul Hanan bin Haji Erwan, chairman of the Student Representative Council.
The event also saw screening of a video titled 'Awakening the Ummah' followed by the opening of the programme and the introduction to various booths.
The programme aims to create awareness among youths, especially students studying at UNISSA, on the importance of staying away from things that do not benefit them or the religion, the society and the country.
'Awakening the Ummah' also hopes it can help in the fight against wrongdoers that are attacking the minds of youths either directly or indirectly.
Another objective of the programme is to answer the call of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to make UNISSA active and creative in providing educational programmes that provide students early exposure to religion.
The four-day event, which will run until Sunday, features a religious booth organised by faculties at UNISSA as well as booths selling food and other items.
