Vandals broke into a nursery and caused thousands of pounds of damage on Monday night.

They covered the carpets, walls, ceiling and even a TV with paint.

Fire extinguishers were also set off inside the building in Portsmouth, Hampshire, which was forced to close yesterday and today for the mess to be cleaned.

Police are trying to find the thugs who damaged Arundel Court Primary Academy and Nursery.

The carpets have had to be ripped out and toys thrown away.

The nursery posted on its Facebook page: ‘SHOCKING SAD NEWS!!!!

‘Sadly last night our nursery was broken into and horrifically vandalised causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

‘Due to this mindless act, Nursery will be closed tomorrow but hopefully we will put some sort of provision in place for Thursday.

‘If anyone has any information on the break in please contact the school.’

Karen Stocks – headteacher of the nursery and neighbouring Arundel Court Primary School said: ‘We’ve had an overwhelming response, overwhelming support from the community really.

‘I have been in tears most of the day because of the generosity.

‘We’ve got a couple of people coming down later today – it’s just fantastic.

‘It’s great Dunkirk spirit.’

Parents spoke of their shock.

Clare Zammit said: ‘Absolutely shocking best school I know, obviously kids hope they get caught for this so wrong.’

Stephanie Baker added: ‘How could anyone do such a horrible thing to such a lovely school.’

Maggie Moles said: ‘That is awful. If you need any help cleaning up we can come down and help.’

A Hampshire police spokesman said of the breaking in overnight between Monday Tuesday: ‘Entry was gained overnight, and damage was caused to various items within the site.

‘Nothing was stolen.’
