"Responsibility to Maintain Cleanliness and Public Property"

On 3rd October 1970, the name, Bandar Brunei was changed to Bandar Seri Begawan, in honour of respecting the leadership of Almarhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien. The renaming is not merely symbolic, but reflects respect for a charismatic and trustworthy leader; the determination to make the city safe, clean, beautiful, prosperous and harmonious; as well as efforts to strengthen the identity of a Zikir Nation that is pure both physically and spiritually. The matter was among the contents of the Friday sermon titled "Responsibility to Maintain Cleanliness and Public Property". Also touched upon were responsibilities as citizens and residents of the country.

The Imam or prayer leader said therefore, our responsibility today as citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam is not only to live in it, but also to maintain cleanliness and respect the facilities and public properties found in it. Cleanliness is not only the responsibility of the government, but the responsibility of every individual, whether residents or tourists. Moreover, traders and visitors, the attitude of dumping rubbish everywhere, not maintaining the cleanliness of toilets, damaging parks or signboards are among the acts that reflect a lack of morality and civic awareness.
