Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Muhammed Taib, in her capacity as Registrar of Trade Marks, Patents and Industrial Designs, highlighted the shared responsibility of protecting intellectual property in the digital marketplace and the importance of intellectual property enforcement and recognised that emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), present both opportunities and challenges, raising new questions surrounding ownership, authenticity and accountability. In this regard, the Attorney General stressed the need for regional and international cooperation to effectively combat cross-border infringement.
She said this during a seminar on ‘Digital and Online Intellectual Property Infringement and Enforcement’ at the Jubli Emas Hall, Law and Courts Building, Attorney General’s Chambers yesterday. It was organised by the Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) in conjunction with the annual IP Enforcement Week celebrated by ASEAN member states under the auspices of the ASEAN Network of Intellectual Property Enforcement Experts (ANIEE).
Meanwhile, speakers from various agencies shared insights on Brunei Darussalam’s enforcement landscape, practical approaches to tackling online infringement, the impact of emerging technologies like AI, and the importance of stakeholder cooperation to build a trusted digital marketplace.
The seminar aimed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of Brunei Darussalam’s enforcement landscape, current challenges in the digital environment and practical steps to address intellectual property infringement in the online environment. It also sought to strengthen cooperation among government agencies, rights holders, legal practitioners, businesses and consumers in safeguarding innovation and creativity online.
The seminar reinforced that safeguarding intellectual property in the digital era is a shared responsibility.
