AI reshapes curriculum planning in regional TVET programme

The ‘Hybrid Regional Training Programme on AI Enhanced Curriculum and Lesson Planning in TVET’ successfully concluded yesterday with a closing ceremony held at Seri Kerna Hall, SEAMEO VOCTECH, Gadong.

Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad was the guest of honour.

In his address, he noted that artificial intelligence (AI) should strengthen, rather than replace, the role of teachers, and highlighted Brunei Darussalam’s GenAI Guidance for Education, launched in February 2026 and grounded in the principles of Maqasid Syariah alongside international standards for ethical AI in education.

The permanent secretary encouraged participants to return to their institutions not merely as users of AI, but as informed and responsible leaders of AI-enabled transformation.

Meanwhile, Director of SEAMEO VOCTECH Haji Norjemee bin Jenek in his closing remarks highlighted the integration of Generative AI as a digital co-facilitator as the true milestone of the programme, with every group leaving the training with a completed Trial DACUM Chart and modular Draft Curriculum Document.

The training programme was conducted in a hybrid format, comprising three-day online sessions from August 11 to August 13, 2026 and onsite sessions from August 17 to August 22, 2026 and was participated by 20 participants from all 11 SEAMEO Member Countries who completed every task in the programme with distinction, said Dr Ir Muhammad Ikhwan Jambak.

TVET Specialist cum Knowledge Management Manager at SEAMEO VOCTECH Dr Ir Muhammad Ikhwan, who is the Course Coordinator, underscored the programme’s coverage of curriculum theory, DACUM, ADDIE and prompt engineering, culminating in hands-on workshops where participants developed curriculum drafts for occupations such as Organic Farm Technician and EV Diagnostic Specialist.

Participants progressed from AI and generative AI fundamentals and prompt engineering to applying AI within established curriculum and lesson planning approaches and took part in the regional forum ‘Integrating AI into Competency-Based TVET: From AI-Enabled Curriculum Development to AI-Ready Graduates’.

A programme that aligns with UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework for Educators (2021), ASEAN’s Digital Masterplan 2025, and SEAMEO VOCTECH’s mandate to strengthen regional TVET capacity, participants by the end of the programme, produced AI-enhanced TVET curriculum modules, AI-enhanced TVET lesson plans, and Institutional AI Integration Action Plans.
