Brunei among UNESCO-Hamdan Prize finalists

Brunei Darussalam has been recognised as one of 10 finalists for the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development 2026 for its Teachers Teaching Teachers Collaborative Learning System (T3), in recognition of its efforts to strengthen teacher professional development, leadership and collaboration.

The recognition was announced during the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize Award Ceremony held recently at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in conjunction with World Teacher’s Day 2026.

Brunei Darussalam was shortlisted from 169 applications across 64 countries, while the three laureates were Ethiopia, Indonesia and Türkiye.

Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh attending the ceremony, participated in the ministerial panel, ‘Rethinking and Elevating the Status of Teachers: Ministerial Perspectives and Shared Priorities’.

In her remarks, Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah highlighted the need to nurture character in the digital age, noting that children are increasingly influenced by digital platforms, global trends and online communities.

She emphasised the importance of leading by example, integrating character education across learning, equipping students to navigate digital dilemmas, strengthening partnerships among schools, families and communities, and investing in teachers through training, time and recognition.

She also underscored that teachers must remain lifelong learners, supported by policies that provide time, trust, professional development and pathways for collaboration. She stressed that teachers should be recognised not merely as recipients of policy, but as professional partners, knowledge-builders and leaders of change.

Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah expressed her appreciation to teachers for their dedication to children and education, encouraging them to continue caring for their students and to keep education a priority.

Accompanying the minister was Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, in her capacity as Secretary-General of the Brunei Darussalam National Commission for UNESCO, together with officers from the ministry, including the T3 team from the Brunei Darussalam Leadership and Teaching Academy (BDLTA), who presented T3 at the ceremony.
