Seven students from Bruneian universities were awarded the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2) for the 2026-2027 academic session.
Nur Fa’izah binti Haji Ibrahim, Natalie Jia Xin Goh, Lee Huan Zhi, Muhammad Bazli Taib Mahmud, Pengiran Nur Ameerah Barizah binti Pengiran Amir Faisal and Muhammad Nadzre Adzremeen Amir from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), and Nur Ifwah binti Ariffin from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) are expected to travel to Canada from September onwards.
They will pursue studies and research in disciplines including finance, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and economics, contributing to knowledge exchange and strengthening academic collaboration between Brunei and Canada.
They will undertake academic exchanges at Lakehead University, the University of Alberta, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
High Commissioner of Canada to Brunei Darussalam Dr Tamer Mansy noted that the Canada-ASEAN SEED Scholarship Programme is one of the most meaningful ways of strengthening the enduring partnership between Brunei and Canada.
“These seven outstanding students will gain valuable academic and international experience while building lasting connections between our two countries. We look forward to welcoming them to Canada and seeing them contribute to even stronger educational and people-to-people ties,” he added.
PhD candidate in Finance at UBD Nur Ifwah said, “This opportunity will allow me to learn from world-class academics, experience Canadian culture, and broaden my perspective on global challenges.”
Meanwhile, researcher from the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics at UTB Muhammad Nadzre Adzremeen Amir noted that receiving the SEED-2 scholarship is a significant milestone in his academic journey.
“My research focuses on improving rice yields to strengthen Brunei’s food security. At the University of Alberta, I look forward to working with world-class researchers, advancing my research, and contributing to stronger academic collaboration between Canada and Brunei,” he added.
With the latest cohort, a total of 36 students from Bruneian universities will have benefited from the programme since Brunei first joined the initiative in 2022.
Through academic collaboration and student mobility, SEED-2 supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals while strengthening educational partnerships and people-to-people ties between Canada and ASEAN member states.
