8th Asean Schools Games 2016 Concludes

The nine-day 8th Asean Schools Games 2016 has come to an end on Thursday. Contingents from all participating country will be returning to their respective states and compete again in next year's championship, which will be held in Singapore.

 

To celebrate the championship this year, an official closing ceremony was held in the International Convention and Exhibition Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

 

Attending as a representative of Brunei Darussalam was Awang Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, Director General of Education, Ministry of Education, a press release said.

 

The closing ceremony was officiated by Associate Professor Chavance Tongroach, Thailand Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports. The event saw the flag-handing of the official flag of the Asean Schools Games to the next host, Singapore, which was received by Liew Weili, Divisional Director of Singapore's Ministry of Education.

 

The championship this year has been dominated by Thailand, which collected a total of 125 medals (56 golds, 36 silvers and 33 bronzes). This is the fourth time that Thailand has been placed first in the number of medals won. It is also the country with the largest number of medal count since the inception of the championship in 2009.

 

More than 1,600 athletes from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand took part in the championship this year.
